Objective: Analyze several technology related trends that will impact upon career choices, financial independence, and ultimately the family. Directions – Do not lose, alter the shape or, or make any marks on your foam square. It must be returned at the end of the class. During our discussion today, record necessary facts on your Trends - Vocabulary worksheet. Use a colored pencil to draw an icon to help you remember the ideas.

What if…. Your dad is an architect in Salisbury. He has been offered a job which will pay his entire lifetime salary if he agrees to live in Iraq for two years to design new schools. And… Your mom is a big business consultant who works in California from Monday through Friday, and flies home to Salisbury for weekends. And… you have two younger siblings, age 8 and 10 This is your senior year of high school Does work affect family life? Does family life affect your work?

The Effects of Work on Family Life Positive –Satisfaction at work carries over into home –Work confidence can give home confidence –Models a hard work attitude for the children –Requires sharing the responsibilities at home Negative –Time management –Work overload –Too busy or tired for self or family

We have become victims of multi-tasking madness - the ability to juggle multiple thoughts, tasks and jobs. We place ourselves at risk by trying to drive while talking on our cell phones. We become captives of technology, waiting for data to download or transfer, micro-wave popcorn to pop, VCRs to rewind or waiting in line at drive-through restaurants while we fidget with our personal digital assistants.

Modern Day Stress is Increasing and Creating a Bigger Need for Strong Families who Care for One Another “Techno-Stress” = multi-tasking madness Symptoms of “Techno-Stress:” Inability to Concentrate on Single Issue Unfinished Tasks Creep into Consciousness Increased Irritability Loss of Memory or Patience Feeling a Loss of Control

Trends – Refer to Groups of People Too… Certain generations of people tend to have some similar values which have an impact on our society.

BABY BOOMERS By the year 2030, the baby boomers will be ages 66—84 and make up about 20% of the total population A baby boomer is a person born between 1946 and 1964 in Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and the US. This time period followed WWII and showed an unusual increase in the birth rate.

GENERATION X A person born from about 1965-1980

GENERATION Y A person born from about 1977-2001 Also known as the echo boomers, millennials, digital natives, and The Net generation Expected to have a major impact on our society Expected to want a high level of life balance between work and personal life. They will expect job flexibility with systems such as telecommuting.

Individuals are becoming more interested in careers that offer better fringe benefits to provide for their families Fringe Benefits = Employee Benefits –Life insurance –Health insurance –Retirement accounts –On site child care –Paid or Unpaid Time Off –Discounts

TRENDS: THE CHANGING WORKPLACE DUE TO CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY, THE DEMAND FOR CERTAIN JOBS IS CHANGING. CONSIDER THIS WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR CAREER PLANS YOU MAY SEE CERTAIN JOBS DISAPPEAR IN YOUR LIFETIME DUE TO CHANGES IN SOCIETY. –Disappearing jobs – bank tellers, typists, telephone operators, dishwashers YOU MAY NEED TO RETOOL FOR SEVERAL DIFFERENT JOBS IN YOUR LIFETIME. SERVICE INDUSTRIES ARE GROWING.

More Individuals are looking for Flexible Work Arrangements in order to have Time to Work on Family Strength Priorities Telecommuting – work in a home office connected by electronic technologyTelecommuting Job – Sharing – two people divide the work of one. TREND: A GLOBAL WORKPLACE Our experiences at work and in our communities are increasingly global –creating more interaction between people of different countries. Improved communication and transportation have linked the far ends of the earth. Goods are sold in countries other than where they originate. People from foreign soil move to own businesses and to work.

TREND: LIFELONG EDUCATION IS REQUIRED TO KEEP UP WITH CHANGES AT WORK AND IN THE WORLD. People of all ages are seeking education - some online. Many people will need retraining if their jobs are eliminated. Returning to school can put pressures on the daily lifestyle, but the benefits are usually worth it.

TREND: COCOONING Lack of human interaction due to spending large amounts of time within your home via computer, TV and or the phone leads to a decline of social skills.

TREND: BOOMERANG CHILDREN Even though young adults today may prefer to live independently, they may not be able to afford to do so, and as a result move back to their family homes. Many entry level jobs today offer low wages yet housing costs have soared, which has put independent living out of reach for many young adults. (www.prb.org)

TREND: BOOMERANG CHILDREN Not only are they leaving home later, they are also more likely to return home - back into the role of a dependent. Currently 40% of young adults BOOMERANG.

Balancing Family and Work One of the biggest challenges of families Work should be an enjoyable part of a well rounded life. Family oriented employers are adapting new programs and benefits to meet the needs of working parents.

How Should I Manage my Multiple Roles? Make Quality Decisions about –Education levels –Career –Use of Technology –Use of Money Build basic relationship skills to help your family work through situations when choices need to be made.
