Renaissance Renaissance means “rebirth”. Rebirth of Greek/Roman thought, art. 300 yrs, 1300- 1600 Began in N. Italy. Italy was the merchant of eastern goods for western Europe. They picked up new ideas from the Muslims, as well as “rediscovering” Greek/Roman learning from monasteries and Arabic scholars

Renaissance Thinking changes from… Importance of group to importance of individual Heavenly rewards to earthly pleasures Afterlife to this life on Earth Religious to secular- worldly instead of spiritual and concerned with the here and now

Renaissance Humanism- movement that focused on human potential and achievements Renaissance man- ideal individual tried to master every area of study. Patrons- wealthy merchants and church leaders that supported the arts Perspective- art technique that shows three dimensions Vernacular- native language

Forces Driving the Renaissance Increased trade with Asia and other regions Growth of large, wealthy city-states in Italy Renewed interest in the classical learning of ancient Greece and Rome Rise of rich and powerful merchants, who became patrons of the arts Increased desire for scientific and technical knowledge Desire to beautify cities
