2 New Artistic Styles Neoclassical Style emerges (Art, Architecture,& Music) Pre-Enlightenment art style is baroque—grand, ornate design Enlightenment style is neoclassical, based on Greek/Roman themes – simpler & elegant Baroque style Neoclassical architecture

3 Art of the Enlightenment Jean – Jacques David invents a new style for the democratic values of the Enlightenment—one that is the very opposite of the luxuriousness of the Rococo—and that looks back to Renaissance and ancient Greek art, hence the name—Neo- Classicism (new classicism).

4 The Development of Music The 17th and 18th centuries saw the rise of the opera, oratorio, sonata, concerto, and symphony Italians were the first to develop above formats Germans, Austrians, and English followed Most musicians depended on a patron—perhaps a prince who would offer a court and financial support Helped make Italy and Germany music leaders

5 The Development of Music Bach and Handel—1600-1750 timeframe Composers, seen as geniuses (Baroque music style) Haydn and Mozart - 1750 -1800 timeframe (Classical composers) Their renown caused the musical center of Europe to shift from Italy and Germany to the Austrian Empire

6 The Development of Music JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH 1685-1750 One of the greatest composers of all time He wrote over 1000 pieces of music! Much of his music was written for the church. Music was a worship of God “…well ordered music in the honor of God”

7 The Development of Music George Frederick Handel (1685-1759) Born in Germany the same year as Bach Best known for his religious music Messiah called “one of those rare works that appealed immediately to everyone, and yet…a masterpiece of the highest order”

8 The Development of Music Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Ushers in Classical Era of Music He helped develop new musical forms, like the string quartet and the symphony. In fact, even though he didn't invent it, Haydn is known as the "Father of the Symphony.“ Composed 104 symphonies

9 The Development of Music Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Child prodigy: first concert at age 6, first opera at age 12 Composed over 600 works Dies debt-ridden pauper at age 35 Widely considered the greatest classical composer

10 The Development of Music Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) Another child prodigy Began performing at age 7 He began to lose his hearing at 26 Actually composed 80 songs after he was deaf His music was so original that he started a whole new type of music (called romantic).
