Columbian Exchange Project The following is the selection of one item from the US exchanged with Europe, and one item from Europe exchanged with the US with a description of the effect the European item had in the United States.

United States Item exchanged to the Europe Marigolds Marigolds are colorful gold flowers that is commonly grown along outside edges of in gardens in the United States. Due to it’s pungent smell, Marigolds are grown at the edge of gardens to keep various birds and animals from eating goods in the garden.

European item exchanged to the United States Crabgrass A species of grass common in the United States that has a long germination period and is quit hardy. Crabgrass is often referred to as a weed in the United States due to the various color differences of the same plants and it’s ability to choke out other more desirable plants with it’s extensive root system.

Compare and Contrast In most cases the new goods received from England during the Columbian Exchange were of a positive effect. I this case, crabgrass was a wash, being neither more positive or more negative. Although crabgrass is a sturdy grass that has some nutritional value for animals in pasture, it is not widely used and is often referred to as a nuisance weed that is not desirable.

Although crabgrass is commonly a grass we spend money of eliminating it does have some value as it’s seeds are often used as food for songbirds
