The Game of Life Erik Amelia Amy

What is the “Game of Life?” The “Game of Life” (often referred to as Life) is not your typical game. There are no actual players and the outcome is based on the initial configuration that is manipulated by certain rules. Life is an example of cellular automaton. Grid of cells Any finite number of dimensions Cells Binary – On/Off, Alive/Dead, 1/0 A set is called a neighborhood Fixed rules are applied to each cell of the entire grid simultaneously to determine the next “generation” of cells.

Real Life Examples Flight of Starlings Schools of fish

What makes the “Game of Life?” The Rules! A dead cell with exactly 3 neighbors becomes a live cell. A live cell with 2 or 3 neighbors stays alive. In all other cases, a cell dies or remains dead.

Still Lives

Oscillators

Spaceships

Why is Life important? Life can be used in the study of many different areas of math and science such as Intelligence of nature Traffic problems Computer viruses Human diseases

More Complicated Patterns
