2 Possible Parenthesis Explanatory words and phrases are called parenthesis. They can be inserted into sentences using parenthetic brackets, commas or dashes. For example: Mr Brown shouted.

3 Mr Brown (the caretaker) shouted. Mr Brown, the caretaker, shouted. Mr Brown - the caretaker - shouted.

4 Mr Brown found the key in his desk. Look at this sentence: There are all sorts of bits of explanation that could be added.

5 Mr Brown found the key in his desk. What desk? What key? Who is he?

6 Mr Brown - our teacher - found the key, which he had lost, in his desk (where he normally keeps his spare teeth).
