Adding Value with IVC Craig Mollerstuen June 2008

Introduction Craig Mollerstuen VP - Alaska Operations GCI Managed Broadband Services

What We Do With Distance Learning Technologies Shared Classes Collaborative Learning Enrichment Opportunities Student Services Professional Development Administrative Meetings

Shared Classes A teacher in one location delivering instruction to students in one or more different geographic location Usually quarter or semester long Complementing “Same-time, Same- place” instruction currently being delivered to those students For example: Algebra, Geometry, US History, Computers, Literature, etc.

Collaborative Learning Students, teachers or subject matter experts in multiple different geographic locations working together on a common educational project Multiple interactions, not tied to quarters or semesters Integrated with the “Same-time, Same- place” instruction For example: Video Sleuths; Brenton White, Large Format Maps; Challenger Learning Center e-Missions; etc.

Enrichment Opportunities Providing enriching events to students in their own school Usually a single “event” Video Field Trips: Buffalo Zoo; NASA Teaching From Space; Alaska SeaLife Center; Imaginarium; etc. Battle of the Books; FIRST LEGO League; Around Alaska; etc.

Student Services Special Education IEP Development Consultation and Review Supplemental Educational Services Court and Social Services

Professional Development Training and educating the highly qualified teachers and paraprofessionals in the schools Examples: University Classes; Paraprofessional test preparation; District-wide training; etc.

Administrative Meetings Holding more effective meetings Examples: Superintendent and Principals, Reading program, Curriculum, Maintenance and Operations, Technology department and teacher leaders, etc.

What Can We Do With Distance Learning Technology Shared Classes Collaborative Learning Enrichment Opportunities Student Services Professional Development Administrative Meetings

Terminology and Technology Asynchronous and Synchronous History of Distance Learning Types of Distance Learning Distance Learning Technologies

Internet Technologies Web and E-mail Streaming Video (Web Based) Course Management Web Conferencing (or Web Meeting) Video Conferencing

Web and E-mail Replaces bulletin boards and handouts Replaces mail and fax

Streaming Video Audio and Video available over the Internet The content is viewed as it is downloaded “Quicktime”, “Real Media” and “Windows Media” are all streaming video formats http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_video

Web Course Management A course management system (CMS) “is a software system designed to facilitate teachers in the management of educational courses for their students…” “While often thought of as primarily tools for distance education, they are often used to supplement the face-to-face classroom.”

Web Course Management “Components of these systems usually include templates for content pages, discussion forums, chat, quizzes and exercises such as multiple-choice, true/false and one-word-answer. Teachers fill in these templates and then release them for learners to use.” “Blackboard”, “WebCT” and “Moodle” are software vendors http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Managed_Learning_Environment

Web Conferencing (Web Meeting) “Web conferencing is used to hold group meetings or live presentations over the Internet.” “In a web conference, each participant sits at their own computer, and is connected to other participants via the internet. The most basic feature of a web conference is screen sharing, whereby conference participants see whatever is on the presenter's screen.”

Web Conferencing (Web Meeting) “Usually this is accompanied by voice communication, either through a traditional telephone conference, or through VoIP, although sometimes text chat is used in place of voice.” “Elluminate”, “WebEx”, “Live Meeting”, “Convoq” (and others) are software vendors http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_conference

Video Conferencing “A videoconference (also known as a videoteleconference) is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously.” “Polycom” and “Tandberg” are equipment manufacturers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_conferencing

Summary and Questions

Benefits of using DL Technologies Schedule Conflicts (time shifting) Different Learning Styles Different Locations Too Few Students/Teachers Blended Instructional Methods Preferred Learning Style(s)

Costs of using DL Technologies Professional Development “Classroom” management Demonstrations Interaction, facilitation, coaching Building rapport

Benefits of Asynchronous Learning Time Shifting (resolves schedule conflicts) Different Learning Styles Preferred Learning Style(s) Open Entry/Exit Model Too Few Students/Teachers Blended Instructional Methods

Costs of Asynchronous Learning Doesn’t match the learning style of many students Difficult to build a “learning community” Professional Development

Benefits of Synchronous Learning Preferred Learning Style(s) Preferred Teaching Style(s) Different Learning Styles Blended Instructional Methods Group Interaction Building Community

Costs of Synchronous Learning Difficult for Open Entry/Exit Model Professional Development

Benefits of Web Course Management Asynchronous access to materials Forum for discussion and communication Enables asynchronous, student paced access to materials and assessments Enables time specific, teacher led access to materials and assessments

Costs of Web Course Management Professional Development

Benefits of Web Conferencing Synchronous meeting place Low to medium bandwidth requirements Usually individual students rather than groups of students

Costs of Web Conferencing Professional Development

Benefits of Video Conferencing Near “together” experience Synchronous meeting place Usually groups of students rather than individual students High quality video, rich media experience

Costs of Video Conferencing Expensive equipment High bandwidth, dedicated bandwidth Limited resource Professional Development

Blended Instructional Methods Teacher Led Learning Direct (Teacher) Instruction Self Paced Learning (Self Instruction) Teacher as Coach/Facilitator/Tutor Project Based Learning Socratic Discussion Etc.
