Inventions M&M Candy Dispenser/Package Case Study Northern Highlands Regional High School Student’s Name Design/ Build Team Member’s Names Name of Design/Build Firm Date Honors Engineering Design Instructor’s Name

HONORS ENGINEERING DESIGN TEACHER: MR. MUGNO ROOM: CAD LAB PROJECT M&M CANDY DISPENSER

Statement of the Problem Design and Build a package for M&M candy that will also act a dispenser when you wish to remove the candy from the package.

Criteria 1. The package must hold at least 8 oz. of plain M&M candy. 2. The package must also act as a dispenser and allow only 1 and multiple M&M candies to be removed each time separately. 3. The container must contain graphics depicting the contents. 4. The container must contain text describing the candy. 5. The container must protect the contents so it is not crushed or broken. 6. The container must be eye catching and highly marketable. 7. The container must be attractive and easy to use and handle. 8. You must demonstrate that the device will work 3 consecutive times to the class.

Constraints 1. Your Design/Build Team has 12-14 class periods to complete and present the finished final solution. 2. You must design and build the entire prototype. 3. You may bring in any materials from home to help complete the task successfully. 4. Three possible solutions from each group member will be presented to the teacher. 5. Your Design/Build Team will present a demonstration and oral presentation to the class and any guest present. 6. The device must be tested dispensing M&M fro each criteria (Multiple and single) 3 times 7. The presentation will be video taped.

Possible Solution #1 Description of Possible Solution accompanied by sketches and models. Include a photo of your solution.

Possible Solution #2 Description of Possible Solution accompanied by sketches and models. Include a photo of your solution.

Possible Solution #3 Description of Possible Solution accompanied by sketches and models. Include a photo of your solution.

Final Solution Describe how your Design/Build Team Optimized your ideas to come to this conclusion. Why did you choose this solution and not the others? Include a photo or two of your final solution.

Pattern Development (Layout) CAD Drawing

Orthographic Projection CAD Drawing

3-D/Pictorial Drawing CAD Drawing

Results of Assessment/Testing (Copy and Past into Word)  Did your final solution meet all the Criteria? Please list.  Did your final solution fall within the Design Constraints? Please list.  What went wrong and needed to be re-engineered?  Did the final solution for the candy dispenser work consecutively 3 times for the individual? Multiple?  Other observations of your prototype and other groups – good, worked well, changes that need to be made if you were them etc.

Conclusion (Copy and Past into Word) What would you do differently if you had the time to change your design? How did you find the experience of working with a team to complete a project? Did you and your partner agree or reach a compromise on the final solution to the problem? When planning the oral presentation and demonstration of your prototype how did you and your partner arrive at dividing the responsibilities of the presentation with each other. Explain how did the video taping of the presentation make you feel? How did giving your presentation before an audience make you feel? Were you prepared and confident in defending your final design solution to the audience during the question and answer period? Each group member write a 2 paragraph evaluation of the problem – explain your likes, dislikes, was it interesting, fun, tedious, difficult, not worthwhile or educational, was very educational etc. Write your full name before the evaluation paragraphs.

Grading 3 possible solution sketches – 12% 3 possible solution paper models/analysis – 8% Final solution (prototype) – 40% 20% singular dispensing 20% multiple dispensing Questions – assessment – 5% Questions – Conclusions – 25% Oral Presentation – 10% CAD Drawings (Layout, Orthographic, Isometric)– 5% each = 15%

TIMELINE – Class periods 3 Possible Solutions – 3 days (3) Construct 3 Solutions/Analysis – 3 days (6) Construct Final Solution – 3 days (9) Presentations/Testing– 1 day (10) Documentation – 3 days (12)
