Webinar between 4pm – 5.30pm Wednesday 6 March 2013

The first three digits are the institutional code: The next two digits are the campus code: The remaining five digits are the course code:

Note current year 12 students who meet residency and are under 20 on 1 Jan 2014 = automatically eligible for a govt. funded place.

 Category 1: Personal Information and Location  Category 2: Non-English speaking background  Category 3: Difficult circumstances  Category 4: Disadvantaged financial background  Category 5: Disability or medical condition  Category 6: SALT, PPP and REEP schemes

 All the categories on one page

 Students can go back and edit  Category greyed if student ineligible i.e. Category 2 or Category 6

 Talk to students now about the program  Encourage students to make medical appointments now  Get medical practitioners to: ◦ Clearly outline the condition ◦ include the timeline and how this patient has been impacted  Start educating other school teachers about preparation  Start preparing your support statements

 If providing evidence you must be: ◦ familiar with the issue ◦ exposed to the educational impact  Evidence must: ◦ be brief, to the point, corroborate the impact statement ◦ be tangible and clear about the issue ◦ provide a timeframe for the disadvantage Note: If this is the first time you’ve heard about the disadvantage you’re probably not the right person to write the statement of support

 Last year students were disadvantaged by poor statements of support e.g. ◦ “Call me for more details” ◦ “The student has told me” ◦ “The school is aware of the circumstances” – if this is so, be explicit! VTAC will not contact the school! ◦ Vague support i.e. not mentioning the circumstance ◦ Generic statements that didn’t differentiate between student impact when a group is affected

 “See scholarships”  “See above” – referring to another category  Blank impact statements (assuming statement of support is sufficient)  “Contact me for details”  “Long winded” -

 Everyone is encouraged to answer yes to Category 1. ◦ Being proactive you can do this as a class exercise ◦ Expose students to the other categories  Tragedies in the last few days before SEAS closes are better handled by the VCAA exam allowance rather than SEAS: ◦ Using the VCAA process alleviates pressure for generic statements which don’t help applicants.  Remember: It is easier to edit something that exists rather than create a new file.

 SEAS categories haven’t changed  SEAS application is now on one page  SEAS is not a 2 month process it begins now!  Evidence is key  Clear and concise statements are key  Bad statements disadvantage  Generic statements disadvantage  Incomplete impact statements disadvantage  Last minute rush – use the VCAA process

What’s available? Counselling your students

To create a student account log in here! For Teacher Access log in here.

Access the Choice book about scaling choosing studies and associated myths. To create a fake student account register here. If you already have a fake student account, log in here.

Step 1: Use an existing Example VCE Program (We have chosen the Maths 8 Program) or create one based on the student you are counselling.

Choose the most relevant year! Choose the ATAR range, although for year 10’s it is optional. Then select the course type. Select a region in which the student is prepared to study and include up to three Fields of Education.

Select the institutional type or one or more individual institutions. Submit or Reset the criteria.

This is your proposed VCE program This is your search criteria

There are three pages of course listings.

To illustrate the impact of different study choices you can compare the Saved Search with an already existing search or a new search You can print these results as a PDF and email it to the student or save it in their account

You can print as a PDF and then send the document to your student. Alternatively if you are using the student’s account they can save the program and search.
