BUSSINESS MODEL BUSINESS MODEL Nature of the business: Siyaphumelela is currently running the recycling project called “SEPARATION AT SOURCE” that’s been initiated by Pikitup (Joburg’s waste management company). They provide us with recycling resources such as clear plastics and reusable bags that we distribute to the households so they can put recyclables in it, and that makes it very easy for us to come collect it on daily basis. A door to door education for the project has been conducted in Orange Farm, generally by Pikitup. The root economic activity of Siyaphumelela is the collection of cans, plastic, glass bottles and paper, strictly from surrounding areas (communities and industries). Members and non-members do the collection and then bring the recyclable material at our operational site. We also buy readily sorted materials from the community members that does waste collection, each material is priced according to its kilogram, as per price list, we then sell these materials to end users of our choice, such as Collect A Can, Remade recycling, Itsoseng Women’s Projects and Zondi buy buck Center. However, notwithstanding the problems facing Siyaphumelela, the overall benefits to the community are important and these are: Less pollution from waste that is dumped into landfills; More land is available for development; Community awareness about the environment changes as they change their lifestyles to ensure recycling takes place. Less costs to the municipality and ultimately the community with the decreased volumes of waste that is disposed.
