Why This Conference & Why Now? 2010: NIDRR sponsored a “Stakeholder’s Forum on Requirements for Accessible Health Information Technology,” in collaboration with Healthy People 2020. Goal = new objectives on HIT accessibility Conclusion: raised awareness, but ahead of the curve 2010: Creation of the ICDR Interagency Committee on Assistive Technology (ICAT) 2014: ICDR adopts “accessible HIT” as cross-cutting major goal 2015: Publication of ONC’s updated “Federal Health IT Strategic Plan: 2015-2020, with expanded mission and focus on: Use of HIT by providers, researchers, and individuals to improve health, healthcare, and reduce costs; and Empowering individuals, families, and caregivers health management and engagement. 2

Conference Framework: Purpose Purpose: To advance the priority of accessibility in HIT systems and tools from a compliance-oriented approach toward one that is user-driven, responsive to human-centered consumer experiences, and results in increased patient engagement and improved health and wellness for individual with disabilities, older adults, and caregivers. 3

Conference Framework: Objectives (Abbreviated) Elevate the importance of accessibility and usability in the nation’s HIT agenda Exchange perspectives among diverse stakeholder groups and identify barriers and potential levers of change for creating Highlight the latest research findings and identify best practices and actionable strategies Catalyze new research and development initiatives and collaborative partnerships that move the accessible HIT agenda forward to achieving the Triple Aim: improved patient care, reduced costs, and improved health outcomes for individuals with disabilities, older adults and caregivers. 4
