1 Metamorphic Rock

2 Definition of Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed into a new rock because of heat, pressure, or chemical change Pressure Heat

3 Types of Metamorphism

4 Regional Metamorphism
Occurs over a wide area. The heat and pressure are created at convergent boundaries where plates are colliding Usually produces foliated rocks

5 Contact Metamorphism A rock’s mineral and texture changes when the rock comes into contact with a magma chamber Change caused mainly by heat Creates mainly non-foliated rocks

6 Contact Metamorphism

7 Types of Metamorphic Rocks
Foliated Rocks metamorphic rocks formed under great pressure where the new minerals are aligned into bands Non-Foliated Rocks metamorphic rocks formed under lower heat and pressure where the minerals are not aligned into bands

8 Foliated Rock Examples
Parent Rock: Shale Daughter Rock: Slate

9 Foliated Rock Examples
Parent Rock: Granite Daughter Rock: Gneiss

10 Foliated Rock Examples
Parent Rock: Sandstone Daughter Rock: Schist

11 Non-Foliated Rock Examples
Parent Rock: Limestone Daughter Rock: Marble

12 Non-Foliated Rock Examples
Parent Rock: Sandstone Daughter: Quartzite
