Hmmmmmmmmm Monday Week 5

Quotes about Reality Using the two pages of quotes about reality, find as many quotes as possible relating to Wednesday’s prompt: Prompt: We don’t see things the way they are, we see things the way we are.

Email Make sure you have a copy: vella.gary.g@edumail.vic.gov.au vellaspace.wikispaces.com

On Wednesday Perfectly worded explanation. Must be typed and 300 words. The metalanguage handout A page of Vocab/spellings. No plans Memorise your topic sentences Memorise key quotes Use several outside texts Underline the The Shark Net Underline all names of texts

What have we learnt in this unit? Bullet point list of skills, facts etc… that you know that you have learnt so far:

Text? Novel? Book? Let’s refer to The Shark Net as Robert Drewe’s memoirs. EG: In Robert Drewe’s memoirs, The Shark Net, we see Cooke’s reality as imagined by Drewe.

You are going to sound silly when… You claim that the people of Perth locked their doors and closed their windows because of Sparrows. Lesson: Don’t mix ideas.

Apostrophes If you are putting an ‘s’ on the end of someone’s name, then unless there are two or more of that character, you are indicating something belongs to them. Drewe’s fear of lions Dorothy’s fear of boiling brain Roy’s new job in Perth To the gathered business men it was Mrs Dunlop’s funeral they were attending.

Absolutes- A bad idea Before September 11, people travelled without a fear of hijacking. NOT TRUE – Some people may have, but we can’t say absolutely all did/did not. Before September 11, airline hijackings were a distant memory and not a primary concern for most travellers.

Do Some Research Don’t use examples/anecdotes until you have researched them and fully understand them. Imagine if told you: I was watching a television program called Two Men and a Half which follows the lives of two men who can’t have children so they buy a boy from a women to raise. However, one man has to wear obscene shirts to scare away wild dogs which in turn attracts women. It sounds ridiculous. Which is exactly the way your work will sound if you mix/invent facts. This is especially important regarding historic events and personalities that we know a great deal about.

For Example On the sample plan the example of Dresden has been used.

Words that add nothing Compare: I think though that having thought that he was different made him think he was going to be treated differently by the kids at his school. 26 words Drewe feared that he would be treated differently at school. 10 words

Structure Don’t rush into writing about the text. Fully explore the prompt and discuss who it relates to Whose Reality? When you do write about the text, do so in detail. EXPLAIN

Add a bit of context Think about the examples that you use. Try to place them in some context. If you were going to mention Drewe’s killing of the shark then you would mention when this happened and why he killed it. A prominent memory from Drewe’s adolescence is the time he killed a shark to impress a girl.

Weave your work Move fluently between: Discussing the prompt and tying it in with Whose Reality The Shark Net Outside texts Anecdotal information

Using an example Looking at the example in today’s pack, highlight the transitions between prompt and text.
