Dictation, integration and the future Our view of the future Presenter: Brad Godson Sales and Service Executive, Lanier Voice

Lanier Voice… A brief history 30 Years Experience in Dictation Systems 30 Years Experience in Dictation Systems Specialising in Medical and Legal professions Specialising in Medical and Legal professions National company, now wholly Australian owned National company, now wholly Australian owned Many staff with over 20 years experience, one with 29 years to date Many staff with over 20 years experience, one with 29 years to date

Lanier Voice… A brief history National support network, not only in capital cities, but in rural areas as well National support network, not only in capital cities, but in rural areas as well Clients from Melbourne to Geraldton, Perth to Burnie, Adelaide to Darwin! Clients from Melbourne to Geraldton, Perth to Burnie, Adelaide to Darwin! Client base ranges from single doctor practices, to large public and private hospitals Client base ranges from single doctor practices, to large public and private hospitals

Our Philosophy… Lanier Voice designs systems to suit the work you do, we do not try to change work practices to suit generic systems Lanier Voice designs systems to suit the work you do, we do not try to change work practices to suit generic systems This approach comes from many years of design and implementation in the medical context This approach comes from many years of design and implementation in the medical context
5
Drivers of integration… Increasingly large datasets Increasingly large datasets Greater requirement of practitioners to draw on these data sets Greater requirement of practitioners to draw on these data sets More electronic inputs used in the healthcare profession More electronic inputs used in the healthcare profession The next generation of medical professionals are far more comfortable using technology – generally! Integration Integration is the art and science of bringing together existing systems, with a variety of inputs and outputs and aims and outcomes, by providing a central point from which all of these systems are linked. Integration is the art and science of bringing together existing systems, with a variety of inputs and outputs and aims and outcomes, by providing a central point from which all of these systems are linked. Integration aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data creation, transfer, storage and utilisation Integration aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data creation, transfer, storage and utilisation

Integration Integration in the Healthcare sector should always keep in mind data security, to ensure patient peace-of mind Integration in the Healthcare sector should always keep in mind data security, to ensure patient peace-of mind Security in data transfer and storage has been developing for many years due to the nature of computer networks; meaning that we already have security frameworks to work within. Integration In order to integrate, we need to examine the strengths, and weaknesses of the existing systems In order to integrate, we need to examine the strengths, and weaknesses of the existing systems The patient/client database, the Computer network, document management systems & reporting systems The patient/client database, the Computer network, document management systems & reporting systems

Integration A definite strength of the current system is that they are largely all digital, or computerised A definite strength of the current system is that they are largely all digital, or computerised A weakness is they are often separate; i.e. they do not ‘talk’ to each other A weakness is they are often separate; i.e. they do not ‘talk’ to each other This can lead to problems with keeping patient records, for example, the Patient number is often entered several times – an opportunity for error to creep in This can lead to problems with keeping patient records, for example, the Patient number is often entered several times – an opportunity for error to creep in
10
Advantages… By creating and using a single, unique patient identifier for all facilities… By creating and using a single, unique patient identifier for all facilities… > Querying patient history becomes simple, and almost instantaneous – leading to optimal care… > More efficient sharing of data for research and patient care
11
Advantages Remote hospitals, rural GP’s and specialist practices now become part of a greater whole Remote hospitals, rural GP’s and specialist practices now become part of a greater whole Result - the efficiency and quality of patient care in remote areas increases Result - the efficiency and quality of patient care in remote areas increases

Requirements of data integration Probably the key to successful data integration is a common file format/protocol…HL7 Probably the key to successful data integration is a common file format/protocol…HL7 Along with this, a common method for retrieving and storing this data Along with this, a common method for retrieving and storing this data –Could be Web based –Or a network of data servers
13
Challenges… What format should be used? What format should be used? Web/XML or servers? Web/XML or servers? Cost of design and implementation Cost of design and implementation Cultural change Cultural change
14
To summarise… Despite the challenges, the advantages and improved efficiency makes integration an essential process in the development of healthcare networks Despite the challenges, the advantages and improved efficiency makes integration an essential process in the development of healthcare networks There is a large body of work that is forming the basis of a unified approach to Healthcare integration. All the technology exists, now is the time to bring it together All the technology exists, now is the time to bring it together
