“Direct” Speech

Direct Speech The exact words spoken must be put inside “speech marks”. The first spoken word must have a capital letter. Use a comma before opening speech marks. Punctuate before closing speech marks.

I’ve hurt my knee. The boy complained, “I’ve hurt my knee.”

The doctor asked, “Can you take a deep breath?” Can you take a deep breath?

The woman remarked, “I like this top!” I like this top!

Use the correct direct speech punctuation to write what is being said. The introductory verb is given in each example.
