Multiplication and Division of Polynomials
4
Binominal * Binominal Multiply each term of each expression by each term of the other (a + 4) (a – 2) = 1 st Terms + (sum of cross terms) + 2 nd Terms (a + 4) (a – 2) = a(a - 2) + 4(a – 2) = a 2 -2a + 4a – 8 = a 2 + 2a -8 Review Example problems on page 165
5
Multiplication and Division of Polynomials Polynomial / Monomial Divide each term of the numerator by the monomial in the denominator ( 6X 3 + 12X 2 -3x)/3X = 6X 3 /3X + 12X 2 /3X – 3X/3X = 2X 2 + 4X -1 See Example 8-15 at top of page 167 Polynomial / Binomial Needs to be accomplished using Long Division methods
6
Multiplication and Division of Polynomials Polynomial / Binomial Both dividend and divisors are arranged in descending exponent order around the Long Division sign Example: (a 2 + 3a -54) / (a + 9) Follow the rest of the example that starts at the bottom of page 167. Do Examples 8-17 thru 8-19 Pages 168 and 169 Do practice problems until its routine
