4 Capitalization Rules What is a proper noun? A proper noun must always have a ________. Open your Writing booklets to page 2 and complete the exercise at the bottom of the page

5 Capitalization Rules When to use capital letters… People’s: – names – titles – initials – abbreviations Languages Religions Nationalities Ethnic groups Holidays Names on maps, including: – streets – towns – cities – states – countries – bodies of water – mountains – islands Days Months

8 Punctuation: Commas 1.Separate days, dates, and years 2.Between a city and a state or a country 3.In large numbers over three digits a.Every three digits earns a comma 4.Separating three or more items in a series 5.Before a conjunction (what is a conjunction?) combining two sentences 6.Separate introductory words from the main sentence Complete exercises on pages 8 & 9

9 Punctuation: Other Marks Apostrophes are for possession, NOT plurals Colons have three uses: – After the salutation in a formal letter – Separating hours and minutes – Introducing a list Semicolons connect two sentences that are very closely related Complete exercises on page 12
