2 2 Why Healthy Halls School Wellness Program There is a problem in Georgia:  Nearly 40 percent of children in Georgia are overweight or obese.  Georgia has the second highest obesity rates in the nation.

3 3 Why Healthy Halls School Wellness Program (cont’d)  Strong4Life was developed by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to create awareness of the childhood obesity epidemic and to combat this health crisis.  The Healthy Halls School Wellness Program is a program of Strong4Life.

4 4 What It Is  The Healthy Halls School Wellness Program is a FREE, comprehensive program that offers: A 40 minute fun and dynamic, curriculum based performance for students delivered by a professional theatre group Take-home materials for students and their parents Resource materials for the school

5 5 ProgramGoalPerformanceResourcesAnticipated Results Healthy Halls School Wellness Program Research based Theory based (Social Cognitive Theory) Create a change in the students behavior by implementing a fun and interactive curriculum based on the Strong4Life Healthy Habits. Target audience: Students grades K to 5, parents and staff. The performance is a 40 minute educational theatrical performance delivered by a professional group. Each performance is adapted to be age appropriate. Eighty schools will be enrolled from Jan. 2012 to Dec. 2012. I Provide reinforcement through educational resources for students, parents and staff. For Teachers and staff Quarterly newsletters, both electronic and printed In addition: Website More information about program Video of performance Additional downloadable resources Media Potential for schools to be featured as a Healthy Halls School via: Web Print Social media Local News According to the Social Cognitive Behavior Change Theory and evidence-based research, dramatic improvements in student knowledge, attitudes and behavior regarding nutrition, physical activity and health are expected.

6 6 Performance Details  We are currently scheduling performances in schools for dates beginning in January 2012.  We can schedule a performance at any time during the school day.  We need to schedule one hour; 40 minutes for the performance and 20 minutes to get the children in and out of the session.  All students grades K to 5 can attend. Each performance will be adapted to be age appropriate.  Three hundred students can attend a performance. We can schedule up to three performances in one day or two days of performances.  A stage is not necessary for a performance. Any space that can accommodate 300 students will be appropriate.

7 7 How Your School Can Benefit  It is a new, innovative, educational experience for your students that will also engage their parents.  Studies show that implementing healthy habits (eating fruits and vegetables and participating in physical activity) can help increase children’s performance in school and increase test scores.

8 8 How Your School Can Benefit (cont’d)  It is FREE to participate.  You receive follow-up materials that your school can use year after year.  A measurement tool is featured to capture change in student behavior and knowledge after receiving program.

9 9 Measurement Tool  To assess what the children learn from the program  To evaluate if the program works  Complete pre and post performance

10 10 Measurement Tools Two Options: Option One:  All students complete an 8 question survey circling the picture that best represents their response.

11 11 Measurement Tools (cont’d)  Option Two:  For Principal  Short one page survey  For Teachers  Short one page survey, pre and post performance  For Students All fourth graders complete a 40 question survey read by teacher (Scantron response sheet)

12 12 Collaborator Agreement  A simple document stating how we will work together with program  It needs to be signed by a Principal or Assistant Principal
