10 The Need for Assessment Library System a hub for intellectual and cultural growth Growing concern of management that many staff members have been unable to keep up with the changing needs of technology Changing economic landscapes and static staff size

12 The NA Process One-on-one direct interviews with 25 staff members, lasting approximately one hour each Survey to all 180 members of the staff –28% of staff responded

13 Who We Studied All staff members given equal chance to participate At least one member from every service group/department Age and education level were evenly distributed

14 Survey Results 89% could turn on a computer all the time 85% could open and save a file 60% could make back-up copies of files 81% could log on to the network

15 Microsoft Skills 89% Can create a Word document 62% Can create an Excel spreadsheet 11% Can create an Access database 62% Can create a PowerPoint presentation

16 Other Tech Skills 62% Use OnTime to schedule appointments or events 96% Use e-mail to send a message 94% Use e-mail to send an attachment to a message 81% Save an attachment from a received e-mail message

17 Interview Results Responses supported results of survey Comfort levels lie with existing knowledge of technology Lacking knowledge of program functions slowed down or halted daily work

20 Recommendations Focus on basic computer file management, e-mail and Office skills enhancement for library employees Build a skills database to track current and required skill levels

21 Recommendations Allocate at least one full time position devoted exclusively to: 1.Coordinate training efforts 2.Provide leadership in continuing aspects of assessment and performance improvement initiatives Develop a core set of computer competencies that all employees must possess
