Helmholtz International Center for Opportunities for NuSTAR and Accelerator R&D Norbert Pietralla Technical University Darmstadt (TUD) (Institute for Nuclear Physics) Helmholtz International Center for FAIR

Helmholtz International Center for March 6, 2008Norbert Pietralla2 What is NuSTAR ? Basic research in Nuclear STructure Nuclear Astrophysics Nuclear Reactions with beams of short-lived nuclei at energies 0 – 1.5 GeV/u @ FAIR International collaboration (established in 2003) chair: W.Gelletly, Univ. of Surrey, UK members: > 700 nuclear scientists > 120 institutions > 25 countries purpose: superstructure of 9 experimental collaborations at FAIR including nuclear theory International collaboration for physics with radioactive ion beams at FAIR HIC for FAIR aims at an exploitation of the hightech opportunities at the FAIR accelerator complex. The HIC will guarantee a dominant role in selected NuSTAR experiments and theory for Hessian universities, its students, and society.

Helmholtz International Center for March 6, 2008Norbert Pietralla3 Motivation for NuSTAR

Helmholtz International Center for March 6, 2008Norbert Pietralla4 Motivation for NuSTAR  What are the limits of nuclear existence ?  How does the nuclear force depend on a variation of the proton-to-neutron ratio ?  How do collective nuclear phenomena emerge from nucleons and nuclear force ?  How are complex nuclei formed from the underlying constituents and QCD ?  What nuclei are relevant for cosmic processes and what are their properties ?

Helmholtz International Center for March 6, 2008Norbert Pietralla5 HIC for FAIR project areas Monte Carlo methods Coupled partial-differential equations QCD-phenomenology Detector design, Optimization and R&D Pattern recognition and Trigger concepts Large volume data analysis Accelerator optimization and R&D HIC for FAIR concentrates on strategic NuSTAR activities that complement the expertise of HIC‘s partner institutions.
