Summarize Your Expertise Describe what you can do Two or three sentences at the most Briefly outline your career focus What to include Industries in which you’ve worked Your education

Focus on Achievements Describe your accomplishments Don’t use job description Outline your achievements, creativity, skills Use Power Words Begin sentences with power word or phrase Facilitate, implement, develop, manage, create, coordinate, etc.

Proof Your Work Proofread Ask someone else to proof application package Spelling errors, typos, poor grammar May keep you from getting the interview Software spell check won’t catch every error Accuracy is critical Dates, phone numbers

Make Your Resume Database Friendly Resumes are scanned into electronic databases Use words related to job Employers often search databases for keywords Use a sans serif font such as Arial Easily recognized by software Keep it simple Don’t use boxes, columns, or different fonts

Customize Each Resume Specific to employer and job opening Change keywords to match job description Highlight skills necessary for job Rearrange education and experience Depending upon which is most relevant to job
