3. Agriculture Spurs Industry Improvement in farming methods: better soil, building dams, expanding crops. Enclosures: the process of taking over and consolidating land formerly shared by peasant farmers. British government enclosed millions of acres of farm land. Increased food output, decreased work force Led to population increase

5. New Technology Energy revolution: James Watt invents steam engine. Became power source of revolution Better steel created through use of coal instead of charcoal

6. Britain leads way for revolution Plentiful natural resources (map on pg. 613) Rivers supplied water power and led to building of canals Coal and Iron supplies helped power steam engines and helped build new machines

7. Textiles Putting out system: cottage industry, people were given cotton to make clothes at home, then sold it to people or stores Inventions eventually speed up process flying shuttle, spinning jenny, and water frame invented to increase production. Eli Whitney invents cotton gin which increased cotton production.

8. Factories born Factories built to incorporate these new large cotton machines.

9. Transportation revolution Turnpikes created as private roads used for entrepreneurs to travel England faster. Canals: built because faster more efficient way to transport goods Steam locomotive led to inventions of railroad and even faster cheaper ways of shipping trading goods.
