1 The Nervous and Immune Systems
By: Claire, Desmond, and Mary Page

2 Basic Anatomy: Nervous System

3 Basic Anatomy: Immune System
The immune system extends through your entire body and consists of many different parts such as blood cells, T-cells, B-cells, and Killer Cells

4 Normal Interactions Between the Two Systems
Macrophages and T Cells carry hormone receptors Brain sends messages down nerve cells Adrenal glands Hormones are released as a result of stress signals to the brain

5 MS is an autoimmune disease that affects more women than men
Multiple Sclerosis MS is an autoimmune disease that affects more women than men It affects the brain and spinal chord (central nervous system) What is MS?

6 Causes of MS MS is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, which is the protective covering around nerve cells This causes nerve signals to slow down or stop Nerve damage is caused by inflammation which happens when immune cells attack the nervous system The cause is unknown Hypotheses: Genetics, virus, environment, or some combination of the three

7 Symptoms of M.S. Visual disturbances Eye pain Vertigo Fatigue
Limb weakness Loss of sensation Speech impediment Tremors Dizziness Decreased concentration Memory loss Attention deficits Impairment in judgment Depression

8 Abnormal Interaction Basically, the immune system mistakenly attacks the nervous system Sometimes it destroys the nerve cell axons, which means the nerve cells can no longer communicate
