3 Stage one: Egg Egg is sticky Laid on bottom of milkweed leaf
Hatches in a few days

4 Stage Two: Larva Egg becomes a caterpillar
Eats the egg shell and leaves Sheds it’s skin 5 times Hangs upside down on plant’s leaves

5 Stage Three: Chrysalis
Chrysalis formed around body by larva Color is green with spots Changes color to clear Metamorphoses into butterfly

6 Stage Four: Adult Butterfly comes out of chrysalis in 2 weeks
Adult pumps liquid into wings from abdomen Wings must dry before adult can fly

7 Body Parts Main parts: Head, thorax, and abdomen Six legs Four wings
Two antennae for touch and smell

8 Monarch Facts Tastes with it’s feet Bad flavor protects it
Makes birds sick

9 Monarch Facts Migrate south each fall
Fly only during day- 12 miles per hour Often rests in trees Able to migrate 4,000 miles for warmth
