Powerpoint removes background colors and changes text to black before printing.
Graphics from design templates are NOT removed before printing – these can be very large and make printing difficult on many printers, so it is typically best to remove design templates before printing handouts.
Backgrounds are fun, but can be distracting
Use contrasting text, boxes, etc. to direct attention, highlight objects

Make sure your font sizes are visible from the BACK of the room.
Be careful about automatic formatting changes
Too many pictures or graphs on a slide is confusing (and usually too small); it is better to use several slides
