Multimedia ITGS

Multimedia Multimedia: Documents that contain information in more than one form: Text Sound Images Video Hypertext: A document or set of documents with ‘links’ that help users to navigate between links and their references. Links may reference and facilitate jumps to places within a single document, to other documents in the same computer, or to documents in any computer on a network. Hypermedia: Like hypertext, but includes graphics, sound, video and other kinds of data. Scan page CC 166

Multimedia Kit (Hardware) Sound Card with speakers/microphone High resolution monitor Video Cards Other devices: Video Editing Cards Video Cameras Digital Photo Cameras Musical Keyboard or other instruments

Storyboard Storyboard: A detailed description of events or information to be presented in a system. The presenting system may be a film, video, a multimedia program, or even an HTML document (web page).

Principles of good design for multimedia Consistency of screen layout Clear navigating tools Image map Text clarity. White space

Comparing Hypermedia with written papers Hypermedia documents can be disorienting and leave readers wondering what they missed. Hypermedia documents don't encourage scribbled margin notes, highlighting or turned page corners. Some people don’t like to read on the monitor. Retaining information may be hard. You can get to the desired section at once. Some have bookmark facilities to keep track of the important documents. Colourful images can be obtained without a good print out. Colourful and interactive documents help to retain the information better.

Presentation Software This was done using presentation software!! POWERPOINT. We have: Slides Notes page Animation Effects

Presentation vs. Lecture You retain better information that you hear and see. The presentation may be distributed and you don't have to take notes. It is not interactive, it cannot follow a class interest and previous knowledge. You have to update the document constantly. It can be hard to follow and retain. You have to take notes or record lecture. You can lead the presentation according to the class interest and previous knowledge. You can include recent issues.

Digital and Analogue digital data Data captured, stored or transmitted in binary form (as zeros and ones) Digital signals, are composed of discrete units. Digital circuits are easier to design and operate and nearly all modern computers, and new communication systems, use digital signals. analogue data Refers to a signal that varies continuously. Standalone fax machines send and receive analog signals.

Analogue Digital

Analogue vs Digital Digital data may not be corrupted easily by electromagnetic interference. Digital data consists only in samples of the real signal at given instants. If the interval is not short enough, bad quality is obtained. Digital data can be copied exactly with practically no loss of quality. Computers and devices can handle digital data easily and fast. Special devices are needed to transform digital data into analogue data and vice versa.

A-D and D-A converters Analogue to digital converters: Scanner Digital Sound Recording Devices (Sound Cards) Digital Cameras Modems Digital to Analogue converters: Amplifier with speakers (Sound Cards) Monitors Modems

Sound Ways to get sound in a computer: Microphone / Line in Files from internet Via CDs MIDI (Musical Instruments Digital Interface)

Digital Audio vs MIDI In MIDI files you store not the sound itself but HOW TO PLAY the music. This means that the sound quality will depend on the computer (sound card synthesizer). In Digital audio you record the sound itself and it hear the same in all computers. MIDI files usually occupy less space than real audio files.

Ethical Issued with sound processing Voice editing at courts Creating new music. Does music generated by computer have an artitstic value? Modifying music. Copyright issues.

Data compression and multimedia Data compression is essential to store images and sound because they usually occupy lots of space. That is why formats like JPEG and GIF for images and MP3 for sound are currently used a lot. Specially important when download from the internet.
