2
Welcome The purpose of this session is to: 1)Introduce Psychology at BHASVIC 2) Introduce the first topic you will learn: Memory 3) Make sure you are set up for the summer homework
3
What do we already know about Memory? Answer the first two questions in your packs by discussing the answers in pairs or small groups. Write your answers on the white boards What do you know already about human memory? Why is it useful to know about memory?
4
Task 1 When you are given a sheet of paper, keep it face down. Remain silent throughout this activity. You will need a pen. You will be asked to think about a list of words in a particular way. Follow these instructions exactly. Do not look at anybody else’s sheet of paper. In a moment you will be asked to turn over the piece of paper. Read the instructions carefully before thinking about the list of words. Do not write anything down. You have three minutes to study the words in line with the instructions, starting from…
5
NOW 20 seconds 40 seconds 1 minute 1 minute 20 seconds 1 minutes 40 seconds 2 minutes 2 minutes 20 seconds 2 minutes 40 seconds STOP
6
Task 2 Now turn over the sheet of words face down and do not look at it again Go to task 2 on the pack, and watch the video. Then answer the questions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wkiv3Ha35g
7
Task 2 continued Did you get them all correct? For those who did not answer the questions correctly, why do you think you answered incorrectly? What does this tell us about our short-term memory for visual information?
8
Task 3 Without looking at the words again on the sheet, write down in the pack as many words as you can remember from the original list. Do not look at anyone else’s and do not let them see. Now check if you were correct. Record your score.
9
Task 4 and 5 Now we are ready to compare our data to test a hypothesis. Fill in the table when all the data has been collected. Now use this data to complete the bar chart. Leave a small gap between each bar. In groups, discuss the questions under the bar chart and write down your answers. Task 3 (the flower slides) was a ‘distraction task’ does anyone have an idea why we asked you to do this?
10
Task 6 In your packs, there are some memory strategies. Read through all four, then decide which strategy you were asked to use in the instructions. Do you think that your strategy was successful? What is the evidence?
11
Task 7 - Applications Exam revision: Memory disorders: Dyslexia EWT
12
Task 7 Continued And you! – will you use these memory strategies for your revision? Why/why not? Are there any better strategies?
13
Summer Homework You must complete this to the best of your abilities over the summer break You will need to show the teacher that you have completed this on the first lesson in September Take a minute to check that you understand the instructions, and ask for any clarification Good luck and we will see you in September.
