2 Revision of 29 CFR 1910.1030 Included in the Revision published January, 2001: b Additional definitions in section (b) b New requirements in the Exposure Control Plan-section (c) b Sharps injury log to be kept-section (h) b Non-managerial employees involved in selection of controls.

3 Definitions 1910.1030(b) b Engineering Controls - will include additional examples b Sharps with Engineered Sharps Injury Protections - b Sharps with Engineered Sharps Injury Protections - [ESIP]: Non needle sharp or a needle with a built-in safety feature or mechanism that effectively reduces the risk of an exposure incident.

4 Definitions-Continued b Device that does not use a needle for: b Needleless Systems - Device that does not use a needle for: Collection of bodily fluids Collection of body fluids after initial venous/arterial access established Administration of medication/fluids Any other procedure with potential percutaneous occupational exposure to a contaminated sharp

5 Exposure Control Plans Exposure Control Plans 1910.1030(c)(1)(iv) The Review and Update of the ECP shall include: b b changes in technology that reduce/eliminate exposure b b annual documentation of consideration and implementation of safer medical devices

6 Exposure Control Plans Exposure Control Plans [ECP] The employer must solicit input from non- managerial employees with responsibility for direct patient care, potential occupational exposure to contaminated sharps. They must participate in identification, evaluation and selection of effective engineering and work practice controls. The solicitation of input shall be documented in the ECP.

7 Recordkeeping Recordkeeping 1910.1030(h) b b Sharps Injury Log - shall be established and maintained, confidentiality of injured employee must be protected. b b Does not apply to employer not required to maintain injury/illness log under 29 CFR 1904.

8 Sharps Injury Log As a minimum, the log must contain, for each incident: b type and brand of device involved b department or work area of occurrence b explanation of how it occurred.
