Roles The roles of staff in learning resources and learning support will be defined in different ways, depending on the environment in which they are working This presentation sees learning resources and learning support staff as differentiated J4.3 Roles and Approaches

Learning resources staff Logging new materials on a LMS Purchasing software, printed publications and subscriptions to journals Monitoring the use of computer and electronic resources in the learning resource centre Advising staff and learners on suitable resources for courses and assignments J4.3 Roles and Approaches

and often in addition... Setting up a specialised subject-based learning centre Facilitating groups of learners, for instance in the use of Internet resources for assignments Guiding practitioners through an ILT resource available on the intranet/VLE Supporting the use of IT and ILT See the Ferl Focus area on Learning Resources http://ferl.becta.org.uk/ for different approaches to learning resources centres http://ferl.becta.org.uk/ J4.3 Roles and Approaches
8
Learning support staff Advising staff on assistive technologies and software for specific learning needs Advising staff on ILT resources to enhance their delivery to learners with specific learning needs Supporting staff in developing resources to address study skills for all categories of learners Visit Ferl to see some approaches that have worked for practitioners, and the impact on their learners of new approaches to using ILT (http://ferl.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=1325)http://ferl.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=1325 J4.3 Roles and Approaches
9
Do learning resources and learning support staff fit into the delivery of the curriculum? How do their skills complement those of other practitioners? Other organisations J4.3 Roles and Approaches
10
It’s all about partnerships... “I’m a leisure and tourism tutor delivering Intermediate GNVQ. I want to set an assignment that engages my learners and encourages them to access a variety of resources, including the Internet.” “But… I don’t know how to do this and I don’t have good IT skills.” J4.3 Roles and Approaches
11
It’s all about partnerships “ Let me help you. I work in the learning resources centre and can support you and your learners! I suggest you look at Ferl, NLN materials, the RDN Virtual Training Suite and other JISC resources.” Identify ILT opportunities in the scheme of work Assess what resources – paper-based and electronic – are available in the LRC Search the Internet for resources Recommend ways of integrating these resources into assignments Offer to help the practitioner and learners in accessing all these resources How you can help J4.3 Roles and Approaches
12
It’s all about partnerships... “I’m a motor vehicle tutor – some of my learners are experiencing difficulties in following the vehicle manuals. The learners need some support materials to assist them.” “But… Where do I start and how can I create an activity which engages the interest of my learners and helps their learning to progress?” J4.3 Roles and Approaches
13
Show how learners can access interactive resources without peer pressure, outside lesson time, using the college intranet Suggest quizzes based on text from a vehicle handbook Create a series of self- evaluation activities with comprehensive explanations which test the learners’ understanding of the text Upload these activities to the college intranet or VLE It’s all about partnerships... “I’m a member of the learning support team. I can help you create an activity to support your learners in their reading and comprehension skills! Why not use ILT?” How you can help J4.3 Roles and Approaches
14
Do I need new skills? What is the minimum IT skills set you need to meet the changes in your role? Are you able to advise and assist practitioners with VLE/intranet use? Are you able to create ILT resources? Can you give up-to-date information about copyright and accessibility? J4.3 Roles and Approaches
15
Working with curriculum staff Promotion of the services that learning resources And learning support staff offer The integration of ILT across the college or organisation Benefits for learners across the whole curriculum An increase within the organisation of confidence and belief in the use of ILT to support learners J4.3 Roles and Approaches
