2 Business Action in Public Health t You are part of a bigger wellbeing movement – BITC support a wider Department of Health project in the East of England We have workplace offers in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Luton and Hertfordshire Champions are trained in all the above areas Champions Networks are offered in both Cambridgeshire and Herts Hertfordshire has the largest number of Champions so how can we help you to have more impact in your workplaces? 3 Why Wellbeing in the Workplace? Increasing non-communicable disease –Smoking, obesity Increasing mental ill health Increasing sickness absence Increasing loss to business productivity and performance from sick pay Avoidable cost of managing and replacing sick and absent staff

4 Hertfordshire Wellbeing Issues 2,200 early and avoidable deaths per annum Most of them preventable Problems start in working age life with sickness absence Common causes: inactivity, MSK problems, diet, alcohol, smoking Significant avoidable stress and mental health costs The human side of resource depreciation because it isn’t looked after

5 www.hertsdirect.org Hertfordshire workplace offer Working with 50 employers across Hertfordshire to support ‘Employee wellbeing’ Including accredited mental health training

6 What’s happening in Hertfordshire? Initial pilot in 2012/3 with 20 companies – NOW 2014/5 we are working with 55 employers Champions have grown from 60 in 2013 to nearly 200 by March 2015! Champions have now been established in the following companies: Watford and Three Rivers Borough Council Warner Bros UK Power Networks Welwyn and Hatfield District Council Hertfordshire Community Meals RES Herts County Council North Herts College

7 Wellbeing in Hertfordshire workplaces Over 300 trained employees in Mental Health First Aid If you’ve not had training, do contact me Places on 12 th March training in Stevenage Mini mots delivered to over 120 employees Has your organisation had theirs? Champions network offered twice yearly – keep updated and network next event September 9 th – hold the date! New for 2015 Employers group being set up – to support the growth of the programme and help develop workplaces wellbeing strategies
