5 Attendance Please have your child at school on time. The tardy bell rings at 8:05. Attendance incentive: N.E.A.T Kids. (Never Ever Absent or Tardy) Students with perfect attendance will be rewarded at the end of every grading period! *Please call the office if your child is absent.

7 Catch Up  During recess from 10:55-11:15  Students will have 10 minutes of recess time.  This time is used to complete unfinished classwork, homework, and make-up work from absences.  Catch-Up is not a punishment.

10 Writer's Workshop We use the Lucy Calkins Writing Program. Every writing lesson starts with a mini lesson, followed by active engagement, and after-the-workshop share. Grades are derived from the writing rubrics involving ideas, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice, and conventions

11 Spelling The spelling pattern will go home in the homework packet each week and Chunky Monkey notebooks on Mondays. There is not a set spelling list. Example: -at: sat, hat, mat, cat Spelling Tests will include spelling patterns and high frequency words. Dictation: Given every week but taken as a grade every other week.

12 Math - Daily Math Review/Mental Math-Quizzes every other week. - Fact Fluency - Problem Solving-Poster Method - Guided Math Groups

13 U.F.O. (Used For Organization) We write in this if there is an important event/information or a behavior concern. U.F.O.'s should be taken home daily. Special messages are written to remind students of their school responsibilities. Wednesday: Students receive a lot of mail and graded work. Please go over this with them.

14 Wednesday Folder Pocket Wednesday papers come home every week in the UFO. Please take out the papers and review them with your child. *Look for “Sign and Return” papers! These should be returned the next day.

15 Grading Four grading periods We use numerical grades: daily and major grades Progress reports will go home at the mid-point between report cards. Language Arts is a combined reading and writing grade. DRA level will count as a 25% of the grade. Anything below a 70% is failing

16 Parent Access Parent Access is used to access grades, lunch account balance, and electronic forms. Please register as soon as possible. Please sign the electronic handbook form through Parent Access.

17 Discipline Plan In order to facilitate learning, appropriate behavior is expected. If classroom rules are broken, an explanation will be written in the yellow box in the UFO. Students will be given a warning before a consequence is given (missing recess). Social contract was decided and agreed upon by the class.

18 Homework Friday, September 4, 2015 - First homework packet will be sent home. It should be completed and returned the following Friday. If Reading Logs and/or homework are not completed, students will read during Fun Friday to make up reading time or complete homework. sheets and math facts.

19 Reading Logs Reading logs will be included in the homework packet. Make sure to record your child's reading daily. Your child should be reading aloud to an adult 15-20 minutes every night. The books your child reads should be on his/her independent reading level (99% accuracy).

21 AR (Accelerated Reader) Packets will come home soon with full details. The packet will include your child's log-in information and reading range. It will also include copies of the testing permission slip.

22 Transportation Transportation changes need to be in written form, email, or called into the office before 1:30.

23 Birthday Treats You may bring in birthday treats for your child's birthday. We will eat them in the classroom. If you choose to bring a treat, we ask that you bring the items to the front office and a staff member will deliver them to the classroom. All birthday treats must be store bought and the ingredients must be listed on the package. Please remember that no peanut/nut products are allowed. We are requesting that you do not bring drinks or goodie bags.

25 How Can I Help My Child? Teach the fine art of shoe tying. Encourage independence. Provide opportunities to build responsibilities. Read with your child everyday. Reinforce math in every day situations (ex. calendar, grocery store, etc.). Have high expectations in work habits and good citizenship.
