Begun 3 yrs. ago by the Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT), the graduate school. Dr. Lisa Langstraat, English, Faculty Advisor It is similar to programs in other universities. Part of TILT’s Mission: to promote excellence in teaching. GTA’s receive a teaching certificate and create an e-portfolio. (It a certificate showing experience—not a license as in K-12 state licensure). There are now nearly 200 students enrolled in the program. Copyright 2009 -- The Institute for Learning and Teaching

Graduate Teaching Assistants or Graduate Research Assistants considering a career in teaching. Requires 20 hrs. of teaching/tutoring at the college level If you don’t have a teaching position, you can participate through a new program where you can substitute experience mentoring an undergraduate for the 20 hrs. of teaching. GTA’s are often thrown into teaching situations without assistance in what constitutes good teaching practice. GTA’s might not document the extent of their experience. Program provides opportunities to explore and reflect on good teaching practice. E-portfolio provides a way to document teaching experience. Use this link for potential employers when applying for jobs. Could make the professional difference. Copyright 2009 -- The Institute for Learning and Teaching

Begin the program at any time, and complete at any time. Begin a few semesters before you intend to graduate so that you can accomplish all the requirements. Once complete, your e-portfolio is reviewed by a member of our review board before is published on the site. We suggest you complete a semester before you graduate so that your e-portfolio will be published before you begin submitting applications for teaching jobs. The center text will give you the specifics about program requirements. If you are interested in enrolling in the program, first complete the enrollment form in the right-hand column. This will generate an electronic email to our Admin. Asst., who will set up an appointment to meet with one of the Teaching Certificate Advisors. In the appointment we can go over the requirements and your plan. Let’s just briefly go over the requirements, then Shaun will explain a bit about the creation of the e-portfolio.
