3 #17 – Andrew Johnson Family was very poor, his father dies when he is 4 years old. 1822: At age 14 he becomes an apprentice to a tailor. Never attended any school 1826: moved to Tennessee and opened his own tailor shop. May 17, 1827: marries Eliza McCardle : Elected Mayor of Greenville, Tennessee.

4 #17 – Andrew Johnson : member of the Tennessee House of Representatives. : elected, once again, to the Tennessee House of Representatives. : member of the Tennessee state Senate. : U.S. representative from Tennessee. : elected governor of Tennessee. : US Senator from Tennessee.

5 #17 – Andrew Johnson When Tennessee secedes from the Union Johnson is the only southern Senator to remain loyal to the Union. He believed that the South did not have the right to secede under the Constitution. 1862: When Union forces occupy Tennessee Lincoln appoints him as a military Governor – until 1864.

6 #17 – Andrew Johnson 1865: The Republicans wanted a Pro-war Democrat as a Vice–President to Lincoln. Johnson was chosen.

7 #17 – Andrew Johnson 1865: elected Vice-President during Lincoln’s second term. April 15, 1865: Lincoln is assassinated. Johnson is appointed the 17th President. Reconstruction plans: He was going to follow Lincoln’s plans. 1. Pardon all southerners who take an oah of loyalty. 2. Reorganize the state governments.

8 #17 – Andrew Johnson Congress disagrees (Radical Republicans) they want the South to be punished and help pay for the war. Johnson: breaks away from the Republican Party. He believed that the states could make hier own laws. Whites were superior to ex-slaves. Did not want to give freedom to slaves.

9 #17 - Andrew Johnson 1868: Johnson vetoes the 14th amendment. Congress overrides the veto. 1868: Purchase Alaska from Russia – for $7,200,000 – Known as “Sewards folly”

10 #17 – Andrew Johnson Congress impeaches Johnson because of his defiance of “Tenure of Office”. He was brought to trial and fell one vote shy of being kicked out of office.

11 #17 – Andrew Johnson 1869: ends his term, returns to Tennessee.
1875: elected to the US Senate. However, on July 31, 1875 he dies.

12 Interesting facts: 1868: 14th amendment passed. – citizenship to all African Americans. 1868: Johnson impeached. First impeachment ever. 1868: Alaska is purchased from Russia for 7,200,000 dollars.

13 Inventions: 1866: Dynamite invented. Alfred Nobel (Sweden) 1867: commercial typewriter – Sholes (US) States admitted: 1867: Nebraska
