Unit 2: Careers and Planning Section 3: Career Considerations

I CAN: Explain considerations beyond salary when looking for a job

Lifestyle Your lifestyle includes your minimum standard of living, your health/physical prowess/intelligence, your preferred hours/schedule, your values and goals, etc When you choose a job, salary is important, but you need to be sure that the job fits your lifestyle, or you will be miserable ◦ Life lesson- LOVE what you do, do what you love.  Statistically, people who report that they enjoy their jobs: live longer, report being happier, are treated for fewer health problems, and have fewer mental health diagnoses

Employee Benefits: The PERKS Employer Sponsored Savings Plans: 401k, 403b- retirement plans you and your employer contribute to Worker’s Compensation: Insurance that provides wages when you cannot work Work Characteristics: hours? Shifts? Conditions?

Labor Unions… The good, the bad, the ugly Does the job you’re considering have a labor union? Is it mandatory? Pros They provide support against big companies Unions allow employees to band together to negotiate for better wages and benefits, and to make sure that everyone is being treated fairly by the employer. Can place the needs of the employee above the needs of the company Cons Can cause friction between administration and employees (us vs. them) Utilizing techniques like striking can cause everyone to suffer $$ losses Some unions are known for corrupt practices In some companies, you have to join the union and the cost comes out of your paycheck

Entrepreneurship: should you be self employed? Pros o You have final say in policy/decision making o You can make ALL the profits go to YOU Cons If your company loses money, YOU lose money You may have to work lots of hours and/or take no vacation You have to pay your employees, but not yourself You need self control/motivation
