The first choice that one of our characters makes that leads to his/her death is Romeo’s choice to kill Tybalt. Romeo declares to Tybalt after Mercutio’s death, “You or I or both must go with him” (3.1.122).

Commentary 1 If Romeo had not chosen to kill Tybalt, he would never have been banished. Commentary 2 If he had not been banished, he would never have missed a letter from Friar Lawrence explaining Juliet was only sleeping. Commentary 3 Because he did not receive his letter, Romeo believed Juliet was dead and killed himself. Conclusion Therefore, Romeo’s choice to kill Tybalt leads to his death.
