NameClassificationDescriptionProducts PET (polyethylene terephalate) ThermoplasticModerate chemical resistance, most commonly used in blow moulded products. Beer and soft drink bottles, insulation tapes, electrical plug sockets. uPVC & PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) ThermoplasticGood chemical resistance, resistant to weathering, hard, tough and lightweight. uPVC – pipes and guttering. PVC – hose pipes and cable insulation. LDPE (low density polyethylene) ThermoplasticGood chemical resistance, light weight, low stiffness and rigidity. Detergent bottles, toys and carrier bags. HDPE (high density polyethylene) ThermoplasticHigh density, good stiffness, good chemical resistance. Crates, bottles, buckets and bowls. PS (polystyrene) ThermoplasticLow impact strength, light, colourless. Expanded PS – floats and good heat insulator. Packaging, disposable cups. Expanded – heat & sound insulation. PP (polypropylene) ThermoplasticLightweight, food safe, good impact strength, good chemical resistance. Food containers, medical equipment. ABSThermoplasticHigh impact strength, good toughness and strength, scratch resistant and lightweight. Mobile cases, safety helmets, toys, car parts, kitchen products. PCThermoplasticGood chemical resistance and very tough, but expensive. Protective shields, safety helmets, hairdryer bodies. AcrylicThermoplasticFood safe, tough, durable and easy to machine.Light units, shop signage. Urea FormaldehydeThermosetRigid, hard, good strength, heat resistant and good electrical insulator. Electrical fittings. Epoxy ResinThermosetHigh strength (if used in GRP), good chemical and wear resistance. Surface coating, encapsulation of electronic components. Melamine Formaldehyde ThermosetRigid, good strength and hardness, scratch resistant. Tableware and decorative laminates.
