4
Journey to Date: Topic of Education Deans Retreat starting in 2011 - draft documents as to purpose, etc Town-Hall Meetings beginning January, 2013 - ‘league of excellence – medical education’ selectees - all MS faculty subsequently invited Call for volunteers for Steering Committee April, 2013 - meets monthly Work groups to refine ideas and approaches suggested by faculty at the Town Hall Meetings Monthly Academy meetings to begin in October Formulating call for Academy membership

The Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship Purpose: The Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship (Academy) at the University of Michigan Medical School is intended to recognize and augment the educational rigor and innovation of its faculty, to promote faculty development in education/mentoring, foster the visibility of UMMS educational leadership nationally and internationally, and to mobilize these talents to improve educational outcomes.
6
Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship Expectations of Members 1. peer-review service 2. mentoring 3. citizenship to the academy 4. dissemination More than an honorific society
7
The Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship Academy Activities Nurture the educational community (educational grand rounds, Academy membership meetings, special events, communications, etc.) Faculty development/mentoring Peer-review of educational activities and outcomes Recognition of excellence in education Expert advisory input for institutional planning and decision making Investigate educational methods at peer institutions and adopt new ideas to improve education at Michigan Disseminate UMMS leadership and innovation to the larger educational community
8
Academy for Educational Excellence and Scholarship a.Academy member satisfaction; they feel that they are providing meaningful value; participation is rewarding; consumer demand to ‘get in’ b.A forum has been created to discuss teaching and learning with good attendance beyond academy members c.Chairs and Faculty (i.e. non academy members) ascribe value to the Academy; participants are demonstrably better and more satisfied with their roles as educators d.Better learning and teaching is taking place By what measures would we claim success at 2, 5 years?

Steering Committee/Work-Group Recommendations 1. Peer Review and Mentorship Sandro Cinti Internal Medicine Michael Englesbe Surgery Bev Yashar Human Genetics how do we build a culture where peer review is not viewed as threatening but an opportunity for improvement? develop tools (templates) for evaluation of real-time teaching (vs. materials) and a process to match needs with expertise prioritize more junior faculty; how can this support promotion? matching junior and senior faculty for mentorship
11
Steering Committee/Work-Group Recommendations 2. Faculty Development and Monthly Conferences Norah Naughton Anesthesiology Ken Pituch Pediatrics Joe Hornyak PMR 6 month pilot: monthly conferences starting in October (5:30-7:00 pm), alternating Tue and Thur; snacks; BSRB conferences will have three segments 1.informational/operational (academy updates) 2.exemplars/innovation/best practices (a teaching tool you can use) 3.discussion topics (debates; breaking into small groups, etc) hold off initially on more formal 'faculty development' in light of robust efforts from Office of Faculty Affairs and Development
12
Steering Committee/Work-Group Recommendations 3. Membership/Selection/Recognition Robert Lash Internal Medicine Linda Selwa Neurology 'low bar' for membership, application being drafted - teaching activities, essay, goals for membership, etc - ideally 100-200 (no cut-off) with all Depts represented - Fall membership drive two-year membership; must earn 'citizen points' of 40 hours service over two years to maintain - attendance, engagement, service, scholarship, etc members to elect limited number of 'fellows' after 6-12 months who have access to more resources but higher expectations for service access to resources (?) that are only open to members or fellows
13
Steering Committee/Work-Group Recommendations 4. Scholarship Michael Hortsch Cell & Development Biology Mark Prince Otolaryngology create a common resource and pathway for those with scholarly interests how do we facilitate and incentivize relative to other current mechanisms to advance scholarship? how can we take a scholarly approach to advancing our Academy? should we define a research agenda for the Academy? Is any kind of research (or any kind of medical education research) fair game for the Academy? Need to establish a funding mechanism for pilots; trips to Med Ed scientific meetings Awards? Certificates?
14
Steering Committee/Work-Group Recommendations 5. Valuing Education Clifford Craig Orthopaedic Surgery Rachel Glick Psychiatry Do we advocate for minimum collective requirements from Depts to the teaching mission ? share and advance eVU or tVU systems; avoid a 'one size fits all' school wide approach make flow of education dollars more transparent to faculty consider 'educational impact statements' for new programs
15
Areas where your input/advise is desired 1.Where would you suggest we should invest our limited resources (e.g. $100,000/year for 2-3 years)? 2.Governance – when and how should it be turned over to more of a faculty-driven initiative 3.Role and timing of an interprofessional approach? 4.Metrics of success?
