What is Copy-editing? Copy-editors read accepted manuscripts to check for repetition, contradiction, spelling mistakes and punctuation and grammar. All changes have to be discussed and agreed with the editor. Copy-editors also have to discuss details of manufacture and presentation with the production design and marketing departments.

What skills do you need? Copy-editors need to have a sharp eyes for spelling mistakes and other problems in manuscripts. Copy-editors for non-fiction also have to check the information is correct so they need knowledge too.

GCSEs and A Levels To become a copy-editor I will need grade A*-C in both English Literature and English Language. I will also need an English A Level.

Person Specification You need to be Able to concentrate for long periods of time Expert at picking out detail and mistakes Highly competent at English Language Able to work on your own, without supervision.

How much do freelance copy- editors get paid? Free-lance editors can choose their hourly rates and it should be a minimum of £20.75, and it’s usually about £16.00 to £18.50. The hourly rates do not include telephone calls and postage which you may add to your invoice. It’s up to you how long you want to work but for a 35-hour week at a reasonably achievable £15.00 per hour could expect to gross around £25,000 per annum.
