ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 H. Frederick Dylla Executive Director and CEO American Institute of Physics The Intersection of Scholarly Publications and Data: A Publisher’s View ICSTI Workshop “Delivering Data in Science” Paris March 5, 2012

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 What is Publishing in the Digital Era? Publishing is the logistical support of information exchange. Publishing is adding a useful degree of uniformity to information. Publishing is making order out of chaos. 2

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 A Useful Degree of Uniformity Paper Era Challenges and Solutions  Quality of the information  Peer review, editorial selection  How the article was written and organized  Copy editing; citation standards; author instructions Digital Era Challenges  Usability of author-supplied electronic components  Format validation and conversion  Support for data and other supplemental information  Topic of this conference! 3

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 Data Pyramid 4

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 AAS/AIP Data Accessibility Project Project Goals  Science – Make the data underlying figures and tables accessible as digital data objects.  Publishing – Develop process for requirements gathering and implementation. Project Assumptions  We have to understand how the community works and what will actually provide benefit to reader and authors.  Technology alone (standards, formats, metadata, etc.) is necessary but not sufficient. 5

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 AAS/AIP Data Accessibility Project AAS/AIP Data Accessibility Project (continued) 6  Uptake and success depends on:  The value proposition to the community, and  Successful communications and education of the community.

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 AAS Project Components Community with well established data exchange standards  Including mechanisms for machine-readable tabular data in AAS journals (http://aas.org/journals) AAS Expectation is to have multiple models for data:  Data files with figures/tables  Links to externally hosted data Project Activity  Workshop on metadata standards and formats for Astronomy data 7

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 AIP Project Components AIP journals cover a wide variety of areas within Physics (http://journals.aip.org)  Including a data journal: Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data Project Activity  Develop process for gathering community requirements and creating implementation plans.  Survey to be developed in collaboration with AIP Statistical Research Center.(www.aip.org/statistics/) 8

ICSTI Workshop, Paris March 5, 2012 Survey of Journal Editors/Reviewers/Authors  What is the relationship of the figures and tables to the data?  What data formats are used?  How reusable is typical data?  How much would authors be willing to make available?  What data is best co-located with the article as supplemental files?  What data would be better served by hosting in external data centers? 9
