2 Middle States Accreditation – update at Town Hall, 2/19/2014  To meet criteria for accreditation we must demonstrate that SBU meets/surpasses the 14 Characteristics of Excellence  Key standards include:  Standard 11 – Educational Offerings  Standard 12 – General Education  Most frequently identified concerns are with:  Standard 2 – Planning, Resource Allocation & Institutional Renewal  Standard 7 – Institutional Assessment  Standard 14 – Assessment of Student Learning  A large majority of universities now receive some form of mandated follow-up action

3 Middle States Accreditation – update at Town Hall, 2/19/2014 Process to this point  Early 2011:Decision to do a comprehensive self-study (first in 20 years and first ever in era of high scrutiny)  Fall 2011:Provost charged Steering Committee….. to begin preparing plan for self-study eventually to be submitted by the President for the University, (while making first of ≈ 90 presentations to campus groups)  Spring 2012:Steering Cmte. writes self-study plan (approved by Middle States, May 2012)

4 Middle States Accreditation – update at Town Hall, 2/19/2014 Process to this point (continued)  Fall 2012: Working Groups created, start working (≈ 85 faculty, staff, students and administrators)  Spring 2013: Working Groups intensify their work (seeking data and input across campus)  Summer 2013:Begin to merge into one document (co-chairs and MS Coordinator try to put the document into one voice, while seeking input to fill in gaps)

5 Middle States Accreditation – update at Town Hall, 2/19/2014 Process to this point (continued)  Sept.-Oct. 2013: First draft readied (then sent to Provost for review and editing for content and tone; sent by the Provost to the President for his review)  Nov. 2013: Input/editing by senior administrators (leading to document submitted to Dr. Kirwan)  Dec. 2013:Dr. Kirwan visits; clears way for team visit

6 Middle States Accreditation – update at Town Hall, 2/19/2014 Process to this point (continued)  Jan. 2014: Draft posted for public input (numerous omissions and errors pointed out and rectified) Jan. 2014: Continued editing (responding to input from senior leadership across campus, coordinated by the office of the Provost)  Feb. 2013: Final senior review, final copyediting (Provost obtains final input from senior leadership; text undergoes final stylistic checks) Document mailed to team

11  Schedule for visit:  divided (like the team) by Middle States Standard  designed to:  give time to meet with all key groups  allow for flexibility (so team members have an opportunity to see anything or meet with anyone in the university, as they see fit)  give all SBU community members access to the team  allow team members private work time
