1 Ch.1. Spread Basics I. Goals: 1)Basic purpose of a spreadsheet program 2)Various components of the Excel screen 3)Navigating the worksheet 4)Built-in functions 5)Creating graphics and know how to print and save files in Excel.

2 I. Various Components in Excel 1. Title Bar: The area at the top of the Excel screen 2. Menu bar Ex) File, Edit, View, Insert, etc Some menu selections are displayed in a light gray color. These selections are not available

3 3. Toolbars A series of short cut buttons 4. Formula Bar Information about the currently selected cell. 5. Worksheet Area A martix of 16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows Each cell can contain text, number, formula, etc 6. Sheet tabs

4 II. Navigating the Worksheet 1.Two methods for moving around the worksheet: arrow key and mouse 2. Selecting a range of cell: Simply point to the cell, click and hold down, drag the mouse until the entire range is highlighted. Press and hold down Shift key and use arrow keys

5 3. Named Range A range of cell is named. Formula> Define Name > put names > Ok.

6 4. Entering Text and Numbers Select the cell where you want the text/numbers to appear and then begin typing 5. Formatting and Alignment option Excel displays the text at the left side of the cells, while the numbers are at the right. You can change alignment, going “Format” and then “Cell”

7 6. Number formatting Format/Cell/Number tab 7. Borders and Shading Format/Cell/Border tab III. Entering Formulas Select a cell which will show results and type formula. However,always start with “ = “

8 1. Mathematical Operators Addition: + Subtraction: - Multiplication: * Division: / Exponentiation: ^ Calculation Order: Exponentiation -> Multiplication or division -> Addition or subtraction and left to right Operation enclosed in parentheses are always evaluated first

9 2. Copying and Moving forward If you want to apply the same formula in more than a cell, you may have two ways: First: Use Edit/Copy and Edit/Paste. Second: Point the mouse to the right end corner of the cell with formula and hold down, then drag down to a cell where you want to stop If you move the cell, it doesn’t change results

10 You can use Edit/Cut and Edit/Paste IV. Using built in formulas 1.Functions Insert / f x : this will show lots of built in functions (it’s yours, free). Simply type functions that you want to use

11 V. Creating Graphics Two ways: in separate windows or embedded in the worksheet Insert / Chart (Chart Wizard) How to edit? Place where you want to edit and click. Or use left button on your mouse. VI. Print File / Set Print Area/ Print
