Welcome to Math 6 ORDER OF OPERATIONS
2
OBJECTIVE: Each student will understand and use the order of operations.
3
The Connector… We have spent a lot of time on understanding and practicing the basic operations of arithmetic. This lesson will deal with how to approach more than one operation in the same problem.
4
The Order of Operations is a standard that defines the order in which you should simplify different operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
5
Order of Operations 1-Parentheses and Brackets from the inside out 2-Exponents 3-Multiplication and Division in the order they appear. 4-Addition and Subtraction in the order they appear.
6
80 - 2 × 7 = 6 × 4 + 6 = 18 ÷ 6 × (4 - 3) + 6= 14 - 8 + 3 + 8 × (24 ÷ 8) =
7
Key Point: Although P.E.M.D.A.S. lists multiplication before division, always work from left to right, multiplication or division first, whichever comes first in the problem.
8
Key Point: Although P.E.M.D.A.S. lists addition before subtraction, always work from left to right, addition or subtraction first, whichever comes first in the problem.
9
Conclusion When expressions have more than one operation, we have to follow rules for the order of operations: 1- Simplify parentheses. 2- Simplify exponents. 3- Working from left to right, do all multiplication and division. 4- Finally, working from left to right, do all addition and subtraction.
