Agenda - First Period: 1.Guided poetry questions continued: Take notes and consider how you’re going to approach upcoming poems. 2.Update the Literary Term Glossary. 2. Margaret Atwood’s “Siren Song”: Examine with a partner and unpack using the guided poetry questions. 3.Class discussion of “Siren Song.”

Agenda - Third Period: 1.Update your Literary Term Glossary. 2.Using structure to unpack meaning: Examine both “The Thing of It” and “Siren Song” with a group of 2-3 students. Answer the related questions. 3.Report out to the class on your group’s interpretations of the poems.

Update the Literary Term Glossary: End-stopped: A line with a pause at the end. Lines that end with a period, comma, colon, semicolon, exclamation point, or question mark are end-stopped lines. Example? Look at Robert Frost’s “The Thing of It”

Third Period Structure Activity: Answer the following questions regarding both “The Thing of It” and “Siren Song.” Remember that punctuation is part of structure. 1. Where do the poems use end-stopped lines and what is the effect of this punctuation? 2. Consider the poets’ use of stanzas and punctuation. What is the interpretive effect of these stanzas?
