Immigration History ► In the 1800’s the Fillmore was a Jewish neighborhood. ► At the turn of the century a lot of Japanese immigrants came in. ► When world war 2 President Roosevelt singed the Relocating act. (the act of moving all Japanese to internment camps) ► Then the African Americans started to come in the Fillmore district ( Industrial workers, Artist, and a lot of nightclubs). ► Now mostly African Americans live there.

Modern history(1906-1960) ► After the earthquake in 1906 the Fillmore became the center of the city. ► African Americans began to move in the Fillmore district. ► The jazz era began in the Fillmore around the time of 1935. ► They started the redevelopment project and tore down most of the businesses, houses, and night clubs. ► The redevelopment project took longer than expected which was a whole decade.

Current history ► The Fillmore is filled with low-income housing. ► The neighborhood continues to struggle with crime. Of the 98 homicides in San Francisco in 2007, 7 of which occurred in the Fillmore district. ► Now the Fillmore is predominately white but still a large African American population.

Racial statistics for Fillmore Based on my graph, I can see that the Fillmore has one of the largest White population, but compared to west portal its has one of the largest African American population.

Community organizations ► Western addition senior citizens center directed by Betty j. Hammond (IS a place were retired seniors citizens can go live). ► San Francisco African American Historical And cultural Society( to tell people about the role of African Americans roll in the society). ► Fillmore street merchants and improvement Assoc. Ran by Dean Dillon ( Is a shopping district that homes some of San Francisco's most finest shops and restaurants ). ► Ella hill hutch community center Ran by: Robert Hector (Offers the kids a place to do homework). ► Booker T. Washington Community Center Ran by: James Grant (They program offers the kids a safe and quite place to home work).
