Literacy and Numeracy – Keeping MATH Fun, Engaging & ‘Real World’ Relevant Fun With Literacy & Numeracy – Success Through Engagement DAMIEN R HOGAN – S0194243

LITERACY & NUMERACY  Literacy & Numeracy skills are essential to engage with and enjoy life in the Real world  Literacy is essential to understand and comprehend, and therefore enjoy, EVERYTHING to the greatest level in all facets of life.  Numeracy is also important because numeracy, like literacy, is embedded within nearly all aspects of real world interaction.  If you are unable to grasp the essential Literacy and Numeracy skills to function at a high level in life you will merely survive life in the ‘real world’. The World offers so much more than barely surviving. It offers endless opportunity and wonder if you can engage with the marvels it has to offer.  Literacy & Numeracy are the KEYS that open these doors!  The wonder and mysteries of life await – unlock them! Everett, L. 2014.

LITERACY, NUMERACY, THE CLASSROOM & THE REAL WORLD Literacy and Numeracy skills are important in the classroom but ultimately transcend all aspects of life In the classroom In the work place In sport Understanding social interactions Comprehending humor in television shows – the list is endless. Every aspect of life is impacted on by Literacy and Numeracy skills, application, growth and development. Numeracy is a form of literacy that is associated with the skills needed for problem solving and higher order thinking. Literacy is essentially the skills set that is used to talk, read, listen, understand and process language. Literacy and Numeracy are your toolbox for coping with the day to day impacts of everyday life. Literacy and Numeracy are an essential component of ‘who’ you are and ‘who’ you wish to become.

LITERACY & NUMERACY IN THE REAL WORLD LITERACY  Literacy & Numeracy go hand in hand to help cope with life in the Real World. Notice how numeracy is embedded within literacy in this classic movie clip, The Wizard of Oz. NUMERACY  Many challenges in the real world need numeracy skills to solve them. Here is a great example of numeracy brought to life in an American High School to solve a real life issue  Year 11 Math Problem (Brookins & James, 2014) Year 11 Math Problem (Mathwizard1, 2007). Sorry Scarecrow you got that one wrong!

More Examples of REAL WORLD Literacy and Numeracy GoAnimate is an awesome tool for creating your own Real World simulations for literacy & numeracy engagement scenarios. You Tube  You Tube is a fantastic tool for engagement. It can be a used as a hook to captivate your ‘audience’ or it can be used as the delivery medium for your information.  Here is a complete example where literacy, numeracy and pop culture come together to promote math. (Moyles, 2011.) GoAnimate Hogan, D. 2014. GoAnimate.com.

A Closer Look at Engagement, Literacy & Numeracy The Scarecrow gets it Wrong! WORKSHEET LINK: http://mathbits.com/MathBits/MathMovies/OzMath.pdf http://mathbits.com/MathBits/MathMovies/OzMath.pdf Mathbits. 1987. Let us revisit the Wizard of Oz video clip from the earlier slide. In this clip the Scarecrow misquotes the Pythagorean Theorem. This is an awesome way to combine Power Point 2013 with the engagement tool of a well known classic movie and story. This is combining literacy and numeracy with real world engagement to lead into a math lesson. The worksheet opposite, with the hyperlink shown at the bottom of the slide, outlines a year 10 geometry lesson based wholly around the classic movie and the misquoted theorem. This is just one example of how you can bring numeracy to life and engage with literacy to captivate the digital student, engage and immerse them, and fuel their thirst for knowledge through digital mediums.

‘POW’ER POINT 2013! PUTTING THE ‘WOW’ BACK IN PRESENTATIONS POWER POINT 2013  Power Point is not what it used to be…. It has gone from new to exciting, over used to rarely thought of, from ‘what’s this about?’ to ‘oh another slide show’. The evolution has taken another turn and now we have POWER POINT 2013! This is an amazing tool!  PP 2013 is a delivery platform that can help you deliver almost any content you can think of in any form you desire.  Fully interactive, adaptable and well supported. This can easily be a staple tool for engagement, content delivery, interaction, motivation and imagination.  Add some WOW factor to your presentations! ADD SOME ‘PUNCH’ TO YOUR PRESENTATION AND USE THE ‘POW’ER POINT FACTOR TO DELIVER THE ‘WOW’ FACTOR! Schrang, T. 2011.

FUN WITH LITERACY AND NUMERACY As you can see Literacy & Numeracy are key skill areas that are not only important but open the pathway to a higher level of enjoyment in life. General life skills as well as advanced life skills have literacy & numeracy embedded within them. Embrace Literacy, Live Numeracy and Enjoy LIFE! Oddcast Inc. 2014
