1 EXPOSITORY TEXTS Nonfiction Writing and Texts

2 EXPOSITORY WRITING a type of writing where the purpose is to inform, describe, explain, or define the author's subject to the reader.

3 EXPOSITORY TEXT is meant to deposit information. Examples: driving directions, instructions on how to do something, news articles, biographies, brochures, autobiographies, reviews, magazine articles, speeches, etc.

4 CAUSE & EFFECT FIND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE EVENTS. THE CAUSES MAKE THE EFFECTS HAPPEN. USE A MULTI-FLOW MAP. CAN START WITH EITHER THE CAUSES OR EFFECTS-DOESN’T MATTER. Example: History textbook-causes & effects of the Civil War.

5 DESCRIPTION Presents a topic and provides details about it. Use either a bubble map or circle map (Or Both) Examples: Books about Bats, Planets, Global Warming, Bullying, Magic Johnson, etc.

6 PROBLEM & SOLUTION Often Answers the question, “Why”. Example: Books that explain why certain things were invented. Or, Why we do things a certain way. Identify the problem and find the solution.

7 PROCESS Tells the reader HOW to do something. *How To Should be written in steps. Use the Flow Map to show the steps in order. Transitional Words: First, Next, Finally, etc. Example: Directions on how to build a table. “How To Build A Bathouse”

8 COMPARE & CONTRAST Used to find the similarities & differences. Use a double bubble map. Example: Book written about alligators and crocodiles. An article written about living in the city vs. living in the country.
