Chapter 8 L8-4 Notes: Multiplying Integers
2
Study the examples below and see if you spot any patterns. Can you figure out the rules for multiplying and dividing integers? 2 × 3 = 64 × 5 = 20 2 × (-3) = -64 × (-5) = -20 -2 × 3 = -6-4 × 5 = -20 -2 × (-3) = 6-4 × (-5) = 20
3
Multiplying Integers The product of two integers with the same sign is positive. 2 × 3 = 6 (-2) × (-3) = 6 The product of two integers with different signs is negative. 2 × (-3) = -6 -2 × 3 = -6
4
Same Signs Find 4 × 8. Find (-5) × (-6).
5
Different Signs Find 4 × (-2). Find -8 × 3.
6
On Your Own… Multiply. 1. 3 × 6 = 2. (-7) × 4 = 3. -5 × 2 = 4. -5(-12)
