Waste Removal EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Methods of Waste Removal Cellular Respiration- the process by which cells turn food into energy. Body systems – specific functions of some body systems help get rid of waste in our bodies. Plant Photosynthesis – the process by which plants turn carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight into glucose(sugar). EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Cellular Respiration Cells need fuel for energy. Sugar is the most common fuel cells use, although cells also use protein, other carbohydrates, and some other sources as well. EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Cellular Respiration Oxygen is an element that is involved in the process of turning fuel into energy. Cells use oxygen during cellular respiration EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

MITOCHONDRIA carry out Cellular Respiration Use the Cells Alive! link to find mitochondria in an animal cell: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/animcell_archive.htm Mitochondria are the “powerhouse” of the cell and process fuel into energy. EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process during which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to create their own food (glucose). EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Photosynthesis Oxygen (O 2 ) is the waste product released by plants during photosynthesis. EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are the organelles in plant cells that carry out photosynthesis Use the CELLS Alive! link to find chloroplasts in a plant cell http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/plntcell_archive.htm EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Circulatory system Our circulatory system helps remove waste products from bodies by transporting them to other systems. Those other systems release the waste products from our bodies. EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Respiratory system Our respiratory systems take in oxygen so that our cells can survive. The circulatory system transports oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our bodies. What is the waste product is brought back to the lungs and released from our bodies by the respiratory system? Carbon dioxide is the waste product removed by the respiratory system EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Digestive system Our digestive system helps turn food into energy for our bodies. What body system helps remove waste produced by the digestive system? Our EXCRETORY system helps release the waste from our bodies EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016

Other body system? Can you think of another body system that helps remove waste?? Our Integumentary System (SKIN) releases waste through sweat. EPISD Middle School Science Standards Based Curriculum 2015-2016
