1)Progress towards upgrade of the “downstream bug” first semirealistic study of end region (PID) at lower (200 Mev/c) limited, not G4MICE yet……. Grichine EMCal Simulation Update the belt ( tag)EMCal Simulation Update see slides the art of e/ separation gets different thinner slicing? ….. fully active detector? Need a G4MICE serious study …. PLEASE VOLUNTEER! 1000 ! a proper first goal (and boost) for our simulation software and effectiveness in detailed detector design including downstream Cerenkov the suspenders (e tag) may prove embarassing, otherwise

Optimization of 3HF fiber Alan estimated the mean-free path (MFP) for absorption by 3HF of the primary scintillation light from the primary dopant p-terphenyl (pT). The absorption can be expressed as –I/I o = 10 -( cd) : the molar extinction coeff. in (moles per liter-cm) -1 at wavelength c : the concentration in moles per liter d : the distance in cm Attenuation length for the primary dye emission via 3HF absorption : –50 m for 1dye+3HF(1500 ) D0 tracker –21 m for 1dye+3HF(3500) –Very short for 3HF(5000) w/o 1dye At high concentrations, 3HF acts like a primary dopant ie, its coupling the the fundamental PS excitation is quite strong.
11
KEK and Osaka Plan Scintillating fibers had been deriverd to Osaka Univ. June 3rd –Standard primary(pT) + 3HF(2500ppm) –Standard primary + 3HF(3500ppm) –Standard primary + 3HF(5000ppm) –3HF(5000ppm) only 0.35mm , round, multi-clad, s-type We are planing to study : –Attenuation length –Aging of bending fiber –Light yield (beam test) –Cross talk (beam test)
12
Attenuation length Measurement has just started. Cracks in fiber reduce light yield. Need some quality control preliminary
13

summary The most suitable fiber for MICE scifi tracker will be selected by KEK studies. Candidates : –Standard primary(pT) + 3HF(2500ppm) –Standard primary + 3HF(3500ppm) –Standard primary + 3HF(5000ppm) –3HF(5000ppm) only Attenuation length Aging Light yield Cross talk –Beam test : June 25th - July 2nd @ KEK-PS 2

D.Websdale - Particle Phyisics with Advanced Study: 16-03-00 15 Plans for Sci-Fi Prototyping. Contents:- Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors Design Issues Still to be Addressed Future Plans This work is being undertaken by Imperial College and Liverpool University physics Department (Peter Cooke), Fermilab (Alan Bross), KEK (Koji Yoshimura), Osaka (Yoshi Kuno, Akira Sato)
16
Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi A Reminder of the Layout of the 5 Stages ?
17
Reasons to build the Sci-Fi Prototype The aims of the Single stage prototype will be to:- Prove the feasibility of the design Solve any production problems Try to develop more efficient (and cheaper if possible) construction techniques Ensure that all stages can be made exactly the same Test the efficiency of the light guide connectors Check the spatial repeatability of the support system To create a working detector to allow full system functionality to be developed

Mechanical Layout of Sci-Fi Reality
23
Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The fibre optic connector design is governed by the following factors :- Multiplexing Layout of Sci-Fi ‘Stringing’ feasibility of the Connectors Cost, ease of manufacture and delivery Available space
24
Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 1 st Iteration… This had 126 - 380 holes which where so close that it is impossible to mould not to mention that they would need to have the fibres threaded in the correct order.
25
Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 2nd Iteration… This has a diagonal stagger to maximise the distance between the holes (it was still not enough) AND STILL 126 separate 350 fibres Need to be threaded per connector!!!
26
Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 3rd Iteration… This has a diagonal stagger to maximise the distance between the holes but more important is that it multiplexes at the stage. This means that the fibres will be threaded in bundles of 7 from the Fibre plane and all subsequent units will have 18 1mmØ fibres.
27
Layout of the connectors in the space available Detail of Connector Plate
28
Design of the Single Stage The aim, as already stated, is to have all the stages the same. This means that there is only one development programme. Further advantages are:- that the amount of spares can be minimum All stages are interchangeable should it be necessary to fit a less efficient stage in a less critical position Production will be easier
29
Issues Needing to be Addressed Detailed design of tooling for the manufacture and assembly of the stages How to lay down the fibres to a known accuracy Light transmission of the connectors Multiplexing (is this the correct approach) Fixing and sealing into position …………………
30
Future (short term) Plans To define and build the prototype stage whilst addressing the manufacturing problems To design and develop the tooling for the carbon-fibre structures To further develop the fibre-optic connector To develop assembly and installation procedures ???

Questions from Review Panel Fibre tracker –It seems essential to perform a full simulation of a tracker with five planes, including nominal inefficiency and assessment of the redundancy by simulation of the loss of readout— dead fibres. The impact of noise and misalignment should also be assessed. What is the status of this simulation? –Because of the cost saving by multiplexing, it is important to repeat the simulation in a realistically multiplexed arrangement. –Will the main alignment be derived from “straight through” muons? –Some documented information on the performance of the fibre tracker in the MUSCAT experiment would be useful.
