Vocabulary Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Weather Packet Homework Due Friday! Weather Packet Homework Due Friday! QUIZ ON TUESDAY Monday, October 22, 2012

8 th Grade Science Today we will… 8.9(C) interpret topographic maps and satellite views to identify land and erosional features and predict how these features may be reshaped by weathering. Today’s Objective: 1) Make predictions about how weathering and erosion will affect these land features. Monday, October 22, 2012

8 th Grade Science Reshaping Land Features using Sand Mountain Reshaping Land Features On page 75 in your INB… 1. Construct sand mountain using damp sand. 2. Draw topographic map and sketch profile. 3. Predict changes with a sketch of the profile. 4. Add water to sand mountain, with spray bottle, to simulate weathering and erosion. 5. Draw new topographic map and sketch profile. Monday, October 22, 2012

8 th Grade Science DO NOW Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012 On page __ of your INB, Brainstorm three things you know about convection currents. Brainstorm three things you want to know about convection currents. Ms. Fillpot says to lie if you have to.

8 th Grade Science Today’s Schedule 1.Do Now 2.Moving in Circles Lab 3.Analysis Questions Essential Question What drives convection, wind, and currents? How do global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather? Vocabulary Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Weather Packet Homework Due Friday! 14 8 th Grade Science Today we will… 8.10(A): recognize that the sun provides the energy that drive convection within the atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents. 8.10(B): identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather using weather maps that show high and low pressures and fronts. Today’s Objective: Students will demonstrate how convection currents drive ocean currents. Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012

8 th Grade Science Moving in Circles 1.Put on your safety goggles. 2.Fill plastic container ¾ full of water. 3.Balance container on 4 beakers and let water settle. 4.Place 3-4 drops of red food coloring on the bottom of the container on one side. 5.Remove ice from cup and place on opposite side. 6.Using safety gloves, pick up beaker of hot water and place it under the plastic container beneath the red food coloring. 7.On page __ of your INB, draw a picture and record your observations. Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012

8 th Grade Science Reading Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012 Read: Why Does the Wind Blow On page __ of your INB, answer the following questions. 1.What is a convention current? 2.How do convention currents affect winds? 3.What is the source of energy that drives convention currents? 4.Student choice...write a question and answer it using text evidence from the reading.

8 th Grade Science Ocean Currents Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012 On your handout, label currents in the ocean. Cold currents will be colored blue. Warm currents will be colored red. Paste the ocean current page into your INB on page __.

8 th Grade Science Analysis Questions On page __ of your INB, complete analysis questions in pairs: one partner completes a question and the other checks their work. Then switch roles for the next question. 1.Explain how the blue water and red water move in the container. 2.Why do you think they move this way? 3.If the water represents the ocean, how does the water in the ocean move? 4.Recall that thermal energy moves in a predictable pattern from warmer to cooler areas. How is this concept illustrated in this model? 5.Does this model show energy distribution by radiation, conduction, or convection? Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012

8 th Grade Science DO NOW Friday, October 26, 2012 On page __ in your INB, list the tools that are used to gather information about the weather.

8 th Grade Science Today’s Schedule 1.Do Now 2.Weather Data Collection 3.Weather Presentations 4.Weather Tool Card Sort Essential Question What drives convection, wind, and currents?
